ENERGY STAR® qualified roof coating products reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings, and can reduce energy bills by up to 50%. The Cool Roof Program lowers energy bills by defining certain standards for solar reflectance, 3-year aged maintenance of reflectivity, and emmisivity in roof coating systems. Reflectivity is the percentage of the sun’s heat a roof keeps off a building, and emissivity is the percentage of heat a roof lets out of a building.
Lighter colored (white) roof coatings reflect the suns heat and UV rays and often lower the temperature of the roof by up to 100° degrees F.
During warmer summer months, temperatures can reach 170° degrees F on a low-slope black asphalt roof, and they can drop to -20° degrees F during the winter in northern and higher elevated regions. Much of the heat generated by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation transfers to the building interior, and can have significant adverse effects on energy consumption.
After appling Halligan's Spray Polyurethane Foam customers with air conditioned buildings typically find their energy bills drop by 30% to 60% during months that require cooling. Halligan Spray Foam Coating customers without air conditioning report 10° to 20°F cooler indoor temperatures on hot summer days.
The top layer of the Halligan Spray Foam-Coating System is a Lower Energy Bils Efficient Polyurethane Foam Roof coating. This material provided by LaPolla is very effective in reflecting the sun's energy from the roof surface. White is the most common color, but tan and light gray colors are often used in hill areas where roof surfaces are more visible from neighboring properties. Our lower energy bills efficient foam roofs also have high emissivity, allowing them to emit infrared energy.
Polyurethan Foam
Closed-cell and open-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation systems are spray-applied cellular polyurethane foam plastic products that are most commonly installed in stud wall assemblies, ceilings, floors, vented/unvented crawlspaces, vented/unvented attics, and below grade foundation applications. The foam plastic insulation is a two-component, one-to-one by volume, spray foam system. Spray polyurethane foam insulation systems shall conform to the following minimum physical properties.
Added Protection
Elastomeric protective coatings are widely used
over spray polyurethane foam roofs and as a “Cool
Roof” coating. They are ENERGY STAR® compliant
and most have earned the Cool Roofing Ratings
Council CRRC® rating due to their high reflectivity
of harmful UV rays.
